Effective Pitching Practice for College Baseball
Do you spend most of your college baseball practice sessions doing throws or catching up on gossip while the batters practice their swings? If you want to make the most of your time as a pitcher in college, and even hope to make it to bigger leagues, following these simple steps towards effective practices would set you on your way.
Go through the paces at warm-ups
Warming up is one of the most crucial parts of practice sessions for proper development of your form and avoiding injuries. Do NOT on any account skip or rush through warm-ups if you want the practice to go smoothly.
Make sure you cover all the basics
Practicing long tosses and focusing particularly on upping the velocity and placement of your pitches should form the bulk of your training. Also, do not forget to practice pick-offs, defensive plays and other parts of your game to ensure all-round development.
Follow the training methods that suit your game
Often, coaches tend to overemphasize certain exercises or resort to ones for convenience, that could end up hurting pitchers instead of aiding them. Bullpen catching, for instance, should be left to catchers instead of pitchers catching each other. Pitchers may end up injured or finding it hard to settle into a rhythm due to the errors. Too much running often ends up fatiguing the pitcher, leading to weaker training in the remaining period.
Making sure you have effective practice sessions is the key to good development through your college career and also enjoying your time on the field with the good displays.
