Tyrek Coger dies during workout with Oklahoma State
In one of the saddest and most recent death in the world of athletics, star forward for Oklahoma State Tyrek Coger died after an extensive workout in a very hot gym. Oklahoma State basketball coach Brad Underwood gave an extremely emotional statement about the incident, saying “This is the hardest couple of days I’ve ever experienced in my coaching life.”
Underwood was in Las Vegas on task to recruit for the Cowboys during the incident, which seemingly came out of nowhere during the team’s 40 minute workout. Once Coger’s teammates realized that something was wrong, 911 was called, but Coger was pronounced dead just over an hour after the call was placed.
Coger had health issues previously in his basketball career including fluid drainage from the area surrounding his brain. Whether this pre-existing condition had anything to do with his death is unknown at this time.
The exact cause of death is unknown as well, and symptoms of heat stroke are being thoroughly examined. A death like this marks one of the greatest tragedy’s possible. To see a young man soar so high, achieve so much, and have it all end in such a confusing and sudden moment is just truly heartbreaking. The Ohklahoma State community will certainly not be alone in mourning a young man’s light extinguished far too early.
